    The problem with this idea is that the 24V to 12V DC to DC converter (NOT a transformer, they only work for AC) will add some cost and inefficiency and you will not be able to charge your battery bank from the engine alternator. That is a pretty big thing to give up.
    If you do decide to go this route, I would definitely get a 24V inverter instead of trying to run a 12V inverter off the converter.
