Why encapsulate?

I was wondering what the reason for encapsulating was. I understand it helps in efficiency and helps to make the panel last longer from anti-corrosion. Yet, is it possible to go awhile without encapsulating?

Nothing to do with efficiency I believe - just protection of the cells and electrical connections.

Thanks. I'd just got to a page where someone hadn't encapsulated. It seems that moisture is the main problem. And, most who haven't are looking to do it cheaply. I'll be posting in that thread from now on. Again, thanks.
