  • SDGE Reduced Solar Peak EV-TOU 2 GF Value From 53 cents kwh to 39 cents?

I recalled earlier this year, summer peak EV-TOU2 was 53 cents per kwh between 12-6PM for grandfathered plans.

Last year, SDGE switched the money maker month May to be a "winter". Now they changed the peak rate from 53 cents down to 39 cents? They also raised the off-peak rate to be nearly identical 39 cents. Essentially energy cost is the same all day.

SDGE is quickly eroding the value of the grandfathered TOU plan.

4-9PM Peak TOU rate retains 53 cents peak:

12-6PM Peak GF TOU rate reduced to 39 cents:

Yep they sure are eroding the benefit. Rest assured when we are no longer grandfathered the rate will be back to .53 cents (or more) for that period!!!

I've actually on the EVTOU2(GF) plan and two months into the new year. Right off the bat with my first bill I have no credits to carry over to the following months, unlike in past years. I've been trying to replicate my bill and something has me a little confused.....Here's the pricing....

I've attached my most recent bill...

Can anyone explain where that .20073 number comes from? Shouldn't it be .21617?

Also, I wonder why they have the Rate/kWh showing as 0.00000 for the On-Peak Delivery and Generation charges.....are they trying to add another layer of confusion perhaps?

Also, is there a way to figure out how to derive the -$169.92 (Applied Generation Credit) from the other numbers on the bill? There is nothing to be carried over to next month so I should be able to reproduce it right?

Before some of the rest of us start digging, can you describe what have you done to find the answer on your own so we can perhaps avoid going down the same road and paying for the same real estate twice ?

Have you called SDG & E and asked them ? I've found that with a bit of persistence in both my searching for answers and sometimes climbing the chain of command at SDG & E, I usually find answers to my questions. Having done that more than a few times, at the end of such searches I've always found the answer makes sense, although I don't always like it.

As an off the top of my head SWAG, look for a rate change. As you note, sometimes rates go down.

I called them yesterday and all they said was that the rates on the PDF are "total rates" including all taxes. I understand that, but then the .16188 and the .06153 come directly from the pdf and on the bill then have the various taxes and things added. I can replicate those numbers.

The CSR was unable to explain where the number came from. In terms of the Credit amount, I needed to talk to a solar specialist and was provided another number to call. The number had an estimated wait time of 50 mins....so I didn't bother waiting.

I've been in that situation w/ SDG & E more than a few times, but not recently. A recoded message asks if I'd want to be called back or continue holding. If I acknowledge yes, and if my memory is correct, I've always been called back.

          Maybe things have changed.

Anyway, I learned to ignore those PDF sheets. The numbers in them are accurate, but a lot more useful and necessary information about how those numbers come about, and why, and where they come from, as well as when they may not be applicable or be different than published is in the actual tariff and schedule sheets. I had to learn that the hard way. That info is needed to understand where your billed numbers come from. That's what I've meant when I've written and been railing for years around here that the biggest PITA about PV design and sizing is the necessary digging through the B.S. in the tariffs/rate schedules to get the economics and life cycle costing right. With those tariffs and schedules it's possible to recreate a monthly bill to the penny with the goal of understanding where the types of things you're wondering about come from. Done it many times and I'm still a novice but no longer a rate virgin.

If I'm the bearer of bad tidings, so be it, But, that's about the best short answer I can come up with for what, to repeat, remains a necessary task made into a PITA by the POCO.

Be nice to the folks on the other end of the line, they're doing the best they can. As an observation, I got more out of my exchanges with them after I did what I described above. As a respectful suggestion, You may find the same thing if you do a little homework along the lines of what I described above.

Take what you want of the above. Scrap the rest.

I quickly found the tariff sheets and located the .20073 number, so that is now explained.

Now, I just need to figure out how they compute the -169.92 applied generation credit.

Thanks, you've been very helpful and I appreciate it.

You're most welcome. I'm better at relating experiences than enabling. Some folks seem to feel entitled to be able to demand instant 25 word or less answers. FWIW, it's a pleasant exchange for me when it doesn't involve dealing with such attitudes. Thank you for your maturity.
