Making batteries is a nasty uncomfortable job. Few Americans do not want to do nasty uncomfortable jobs. Breakers could be profitable made in the USA but the burden of employee health care is on the employer. I suspect it would be difficult to insure a man that worked over a lead smelt.

I have a feeling US rate of innovation slowed down considerably since 2000 and the rest of the world is quickly catching up.

Whoa....whoa....whoa...guys. Such pessimism. The USA is the greatest manufacturing sector in the world.

It's a shifting world marketplace.........the low cost producer is the winner. Nothing wrong with that and it is healthy. As long as it is a level playing field.....governments can subsidize certain industries but not for long......then market forces take over again.

Think global..........then invest globally.

I do. And I feel a bit like Benedict Arnold in doing so. Part of the point is that made in U.S.A once meant quality, innovation and exceptionalism. Now that labor is a fungible commodity, and the U.S seems, in the opinion of some, to no longer be capable of much exceptionalism beyond exceptional moronism, some of us, as much as we have in the past and still do love our country, are in mourning at what we see the country we love has devolved to.

and yet I see 20 ton hammer presses being sold for scrap to china, and S. Korea and Taiwan are making the machines and selling them back to us.
USA is only making the bottom line as dictated by the accountants, there is no long term goal anymore, all focus is on Next Quarter returns,
