    Generator advice

I'm installing well pump and contracted the installation to the local specialist company. They're suggesting a 10kva genset. Looking over the spec of the pumps they're suggesting I noticed that the three phase startup power for the smallest 3HP pump is 415V * 26A = 10.7kW.

According to this website I need an 11.3kVA genset for DOL start http://www.dieselserviceandsupply.co...alculator.aspx

They were suggesting the same genset for a 5.5HP pump which the website suggests needs min 21kVA for direct online start.

    Comments welcome.

You may find it cost effective to add a solid state soft starter or a full fledged VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) to run the pump. That way you need only size the generator for the running Amps of the pump instead of the peak starting Amps.
This would no longer be direct online starting.

Generators have the advantage of a rotating mass (flywheel) and that helps power the unit through a brief starting surge for motors. Inverter-Generators do not have this advantage.
3-phase motors don't have anywhere near the severe starting load that a single phase motor imposes on the electrical system. So there is some wiggle room on the 3 phase stuff, be sure you get a 3 phase genset !

You did not state how many-GPM's you need, or how deep to the static level of the well?
I'm running a Grundfos (11gpm) AC or DC--I'm running mine on Solar-more info if U need it.

We're looking at minimum 2000L per hour, static level about 170m according to survey. Not for domestic use.

wish I could help, mine is small compared to your needs--
That said, Grundfos makes many sizes, that have soft start AC only, and AC/DC--ck them out

Would like to hear more about your setup Rocky
I'm in the process of getting 230-1 phase service from my utility which will run a Grundfos 230-3 phase pump via a VFD
I'm interested in the possibility of installing of a gird tied solar system
