  • Not getting expected output

    I have the following system

3 strings of 10 Hyundai HiS 290RG panels (Voc 38.8)
Sunny Boy Rapid Shutdown Device, 2 strings going to one output, 1 string to the other
    Sunny Boy 7.7 1SP US-40 inverter

When I observe the DC values on my inverter, early in the day the watts from one DC input is half of the other, which I think is expected. However as the sun get higher, eventually one DC input gets to a point where the input with two strings stops increasing while the input with one string keeps increasing. The attached files show an example early in the day and at peak which I hope explains it better.

It appears as currently set up, I'll never get more than about 6200 W output from this system. Given the inverter can do 7700 W and I have oversized my array, I am disappointed in this. I've raised this issue with my installer and he has been slow to respond. So I thought I would run it by this group to better guage what my problem is.

Is this just an issue with inverter settings or am I going to need to change how my hardware is set up to get the potential of this system?

Or is the inverter working the way it should and this is all I will ever get? 70% of panel peak output seems low.

    Thanks, Steve

I do not know why but it looks like the current input to Channel B may be limited to 10 amps max.

I did find the solution for this shortly after posting. One is able to split one of the outputs from the rapid shutdown device and connect to both the A and B channels of the inverter. The other output goes to the C channel. I'm wired up that way now and problem solved! I attached the technical info document in case it is of help to others.

That uses only two MPPTs as A and B are tied together in parallel....

Is that a problem? How would I be able to use all 3 MPPT's?

I attached a picture of the panel installation in case that matters.

          Thanks,

This current thread only has PDF's which I seldom use my limited bandwidth for. Photos seem to be working

Cant open this either. Probably has something to do with this new laptop.

That's not a problem. Since two of your strings are wired in parallel at the rapid shutdown box, your A and B MPPTs are essentially working in tandem. That's fine - your entire array is co-planar so it doesn't matter much at all. If your strings were pointed in different directions, you'd want them on different MMPTs, but not the case here. You can't use all 3 MMPTs unless you add another shutdown box but that would be a waste of time and money. You're good.

Thanks Dave. Now I just need a sunny day to see if I can now max out the inverter.

If there is an Arc Flash I would expect his buddy would get hit by his body being thrown back.

If you have to don a moon suit the blast expected can be big when it expands. I have seen a big Arc Flash personally and it is not pretty.

Understood. Where I worked, if the job needed a buddy, he better have a hook.
