Any battery needs to have venting. When they age and finally die, they WILL vent flammable gas. O if your charge controller goofs up, they WILL vent flammable gas. Or if you set the CC incorrectly, they WILL vent flammable gas.
So you have to allow for that happening, because one day, it WILL happen.

Thanks. I could set up a passive venting that goes out the window, but I guess I was debating if the pros outweigh the risk there. It would be nice to have everything set up close to the panel/upstairs, but I assume running everything into the garage is safer.
The laptop draws about 20w, the monitor is about 17w and the lamp is about 4w.

you can put batteries in the house. They should be in an appropriate sealed battery box, with acid spill liner, and hydrogen venting.
There should be nothing in the box except the batteries and any penetrations into the box should be below the top of the lowest battery.
The entire system should be made such that there are no exposed conductors as well.
I would stay away from any advice from dennis461 other than using it for examples of what to stay away form.

I have a little one that sips about 35W, and a large workstation at about 130W. The ardroid tablet is 5W
            Your mileage may vary

I just ordered, I think it is called an i5 NUC seller claims consumes as little as 14 watts, I plan to populate it with 16gig of ram and 250gb ssd from my old laptop. It includes Intel Iris graphics, so it should be adequate for my needs plus.
