How should I connect 2 36v solar panels to mppt charger in series or parrell to charge a 24v battery bank?if you could explain why for my own understanding
How to connect panel series or parrell?

If your panels have a Voc of 36 V, they would need to be put in series. The Vmp of those panels would typically be less than 30 V, not enough to equalize properly, and in warm conditions could fall below the bulk charge voltage.
In general, series would be better because by raising the voltage, you get the same power with less current. Less current means less loss in the wire, even with smaller, less expensive wire.Last edited by sensij; 03-07-2016, 10:24 AM.CS6P-260P/SE3000 - http://tiny.cc/ed5ozx -
Look at the specs of the panel. Is the 36V Voc or Vmp? If Vmp, the voltage you'd see when it is connected, you can wire in parallel and use a PWM charge controller, the voltage is high enough to charge a 24V battery. If Voc, the voltage when it is disconnected, you would have to wire in series and use an MPPT charge controller to bring it down to the right voltage. When connected in hot weather, that panel would not put out enough voltage to fully charge a 24V battery. if you don't have the specs, look and see if there are 60 or 72 cells (squares) on the panel. If 60, wire in series with MPPT, if 72, wire in parallel with PWM (or in series with MPPT to get more power out, but it's a more expensive solution).Solar Queen

Panels are 36v vmp 300 watt so series that's 72v 600 watts correct?( With my 2 panels)Also my controller is an mppt 40ampComment

Those are nominal 24V panels, designed to charge a 24V battery bank. You can wire them in series or in parallel. But since you have an MPPT charge controller, if it can handle about 100V input, I'd take advantage of the features and wire them in series to minimize the voltage drop across the wire (higher volts and lower amps).Solar Queen

Check your controller max VOC input. Then add your two panels VOC and multiply by 1.25. If the result is lower than the Controller Voc, wire your panels in series. Series is always preferred over parallel.MSEE, PEComment

Doing anything off-grid is less efficient than grid tie. It isn't really a panel-specific thing.... your 600 W of "grid-tie" panels are capable of producing the same amount as six 100 W "battery" panels, if both were within the ratings of and hooked up to the same controller and equipment.CS6P-260P/SE3000 - http://tiny.cc/ed5ozxComment

The larger grid tie panels come in 72 cell as well as other high cell counts. These panels just happen to be 72 cell and will work as battery charging panels without the need to use an MPPT charge controller. A less pricey PWM controller CAN be used but you will get better production with MPPT.2.2kw Suntech mono, Classic 200, NEW Trace SW4024Comment
