Inverter only outputs at 230-240 VAC 50/60HZ : Can it be used for 120 VAC?

Hypothetical question: If I purchase an inverter from overseas that does not make mention of "split phase", can it be used somehow to supply 120 VAC? And if so, how?

With an autotransformer, you could supply 120 V.

I don't understand the problem. Practically all legitimate residential grid tie inverters put out 240 VAC, which ties to the hot lines here in
USA. The PoCo supplies a 0V line as well, giving you 120VAC to either hot line. You don't need additional equipment, the PoCo is
doing it with their pole transformer. And the inverter only works when tied to the PoCo. Bruce Roe

I would assume the OP is talking about an off-grid inverter and as such would need an autotransformer to create a split phase configuration. Any overseas made grid-tied inverter would have to be UL listed for use in the US, and be able to do 240/120.

OK, a battery powered inverter, not a grid tie inverter. An auto transformer should do the job. Bruce Roe

to be sure, give us a mfg model # and mfg web site (not a dealers sales site)
