  • Considering adding an alternator to charge my house battery?

    Hey Everyone,

When I set out on this project I had planned on adding a second alternator to charge my house batteries (24v) while driving. I searched high and low for a bracket to accommodate this.

I found plenty of options for the Cummins 5.9 but none for the 8.3. I searched online and checked with the local shops. No luck.

I gave up on the idea. Now I am having second thoughts.

Anyone here have any recommendations for a source?

    Thanks.

No source. You might check with BALMAR, they make heavy duty alternators and relays, they may know of brackets that fit different engines.

      Thanks Mike,

I spoke with Balmar and they had no solution but they did refer me to CW Mill. I called them and followed up with emailed pictures. It sounds like they MAY have a solution for me.

      Keeping my fingers crossed.

You may consider a fab shop to make one for you. It sounds like a straight forward task, but space it most likely tight under that hood.

Might want to look at just getting a bigger replacement alternator instead of adding a second. Also is the current alternator not supplying enough voltage? It the current one is keeping up with voltage adding a second alternator isn't going to do anything.

You could also look a increasing the voltage to push more energy into the batteries with a different regulator.

Another option is changing the pulley size to make it spin faster depending on what your situation needs.

          Good Luck

The discussion is installing a 2nd alternator for a 24V house battery.

              Thanks Mike....I missed that.

So the second alternator would be a 24v one. I am not sure if you could link two 12v alternators to get 24 because the windings are often grounded to the case?

Looking at CW Mill's website I see that they offer a/c compressor brackets as well.......

May be time to upgrade the OTR a/c as well?????
