I do get the big picture. You have to be rich, and that this is more for a hobbie than an actual application. Looks like i will just increase my carbon footprint and buy a big generator. From what i am gathering, i should stop thinking of using solar because it is not worth the money put into it. If that is the case, then why do people mess with solar power to begin with?Comment

In some areas the electric utility costs are so high that a solar pv system has a relatively short payback for a grid tie system.I do get the big picture. Other places where there isn't any grid to connect to the justification to have power that is off grid is more of a need than a financial reason.
If you don't have a real necessity to go off grid then there really isn't any good justification due to the high cost.
Each person has to decide for themselves. The people here try to provide enough information to others so they can make good choices which way to go if at all.
By the way. When you add all of the carbon generated to manufacture pv panels and batteries you really aren't reducing your carbon footprint as much as you are led to believe.Comment

Pretty simple you are talking off-grid battery systems which are terrible expensive and inefficient. At end of life th eelectricity will cost you some 10 times more than if you just bought it from the power company.
On the other hand is grid tied Grid Tied systems are selling below cost, and you get to use your neighbors money to pay for most of the system. In those applications depending on where you live can pay off in 10 or so years.MSEE, PEComment

bug out shelter
I am not an expert on solar, but I may be an expert on "bugging out".
Let's see...small fridge, tv....
If bugging out from the wife is what you have in mind, spend your money $20 at a time at the local bar.
I am just kidding of coarse. sorryComment
