    With a secondary purpose of preventing a high pressure event in the sewer line (either at the street or in the house plumbing) from forcing sewer gas back past the water in traps.
    Flushing a toilet with a backup in the pipe below the toilet, for example, can cause a transient high pressure in the plumbing system above the toilet. We do not see this happening in typical construction because of the vent to atmosphere.
