Bala perhaps in Australia that is how alternators work but the USA has different standards. Uncle Sam has now mandated Start-Stop-Systems to be implemented by model years 2020 last time I checked. Just about all autos sold in the USA today operate at 14.2 volts and Field Voltage Regulation is now in the ECM control.

You can also see this in effect as now most Lead Acid battery manufactures now only state a single stage charging algorithm of 14.2 to 14.4. Three stage charging is pretty much useless in a Solar System and is going away giving way to Constant Voltage with Current Limit. Alternators in US vehicles range from 60 to 250 amps and rated for high duty cycle to handle all the Bells and Whistles like electric heated seats, Ghetto Blaster Stereo, Power Windows, seats, doors, locks, navigation, ect..

Yes same here, all emissions based. Mazda has a stop start system that restarts the engine by stopping the piston at a particular point then injecting fuel and spark to restart rather than using the starter motor.

My point is that if you are using a vehicle alternator to recharge then you just need to be sure it is doing what you think.

Here is a doc with the different type of alternators used there outputs and some of the make models

THX for the link. Older cars in the USA, after 90 have the regulator outside the alternator and you can buy a regulator to do about anything you want. Most light and medium duty trucks and all RV's have heavy duty Alternators with replaceable regulators. You can even get them for Lithium batteries from Genasun. The company I Owned in Texas, we had a few 3/4 and 1-ton Dodge Rams we used for Cell Phone companies had quite a bit of electronic equipment we needed to work with Verizon and ATT. We used either Concorde or Odyssey AGM batteries with a Electronic Battery Isolator. The Battery Isolator's had Alternator Voltage Regulator built in and you could select your battery type of Gel, AGM, or FLA. Worked great. We could charge either the Concord from death to fully charged in 2 hours if needed. Rarely ever discharged that deeply though.

We did one modification by changing the Alternator Pulley/Belt ratio so at idle the Alternators would run full power. Both trucks were diesel so they could idle all day without using much fuel.

Have done similar, a road roller with big ac fans was losing charge at idle, so changed alt pulleys to get better charge at idle.

Another one was portable road works traffic lights, before they were solar we had diesel auto start with 12V alt. I had the std internal reg taken out and wired an adjustable external reg. set the V at 15v???? is was a while ago. Then we could set the hrs of run time at much less.

Great most folks do not know to do that, especially RV owners. You can get full power form an alternator when they are turning at least 2000 RPM. Alternators are designed to generate full power at 2000 to 10,000 RPMs. You just need a ratio of 3:1 to 4:1 depending on engine idle RPM. Some vehicles you don't have to do anything especially now days with such heavy electrical loads new cars have today.
