  • off grid solar/wind turbine combination.

Ok guys i have setup my 48v system and want to setup a wind turbine as the rain season is approaching us and i am on the sea coast. For my 48v system i have a xantrex xw6848 inverter, xantrex xwmppt60 charge controller and a conext scp. On my bank of eight rolls428ah batteries I am getting power from six 210w panels. I have this three phase wind turbine that I want to add but i have no charge controller for the turbine and don't want to make the mistake many do and destroy my newly built system by adding inferior hardware. I know for sure that the turbine is is ac and putting out about min.100w and max 12000w (info from the turbine technical data sheet). Any ideas on a suitable charge controller that is compatible with my existing setup will be appreciated?

If it's 3phase AC, you need to dig out the spec sheets and install rectifier diodes to convert it to DC. use the spec sheets to determine the voltage and amp rating of the diodes.

Then get your wallet out, and prepare for it to be "lightened" a lot.

You ideally need a MPPT controller with Wind Turbine capability, within the voltage range of the turbine. You also need a Load Bank for braking the turbine. Midnight Solar makes a nice Controller and Clipper. Nice and expensive, but also reliable. With wind, you need extra reliable, if the electronics fail, your unloaded turbine will over-speed and grenade itself.

A diagram of how to setup this would be greatly appreciated. The turbine has braking capabilities for sure.

Manual for the wind turbine would be the first place to look.

Is there a cheaper alternative. I just spend half a mill to setup my system. I'm dead broke but I need my turbine.

There is ALWAYS a cheaper alternative. Will it fail and BBQ your batteries and loads ? I don't know.

Ok mike. Cash weak but I have this idea and I am not sure if it can work so I am asking anyways. The xw inverter that I have supports grid tie, what if I setup another 24volts system on my windmill cause i have a 24volts turbine charge controller and a few batteries and a c40 that i can use for load diversion and send the ac from that inverter to the grid tie of the xw so that when I dont have much sun and want to use wind i just manually turn on the turbine and it supposed to charge my batteries from the grid tie source. Is that possible and safer?

I don't think electricity works that way, sadly.
