Depending on your utility, you can get some info from them. I think most folks on PVOutput that want to track consumption use either TED 5000 (current clamps) or Rainforest Eagle (smartmeter data). I believe both can provide data to PVOutput through an intermediate portal like WattVision.

If you really want to see where your power goes, the TED Pro allows you to monitor each breaker on your panel.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Would you happen to know of an inexpensive power consumption gateway?
TED 5000 would be the thing.

In SDG&E, SCE, or PG&E territory, the Rainforest Automation Eagle device reads from your meter directly, for $100. No accuracy problems, and fast sample rates of just a couple seconds.

If you want to use current transducers to measure particular circuits, I'd still avoid the TED5000 since it isn't revenue grade. EKM Metering sells a revenue grade kit you would need for about the same price as a TED, and other options are coming. DENT instruments has a revenue grade residential monitoring device coming soon, with a good selection of communication options.
