  • Battery Desulfators????

Does anybody know if these things actually work? if so, how long are you suppose to leave it hooked up to a battery?

Pretty much Hocus Pocus Voodoo Magic. While they do NO harm to my knowledge, but do not do what they claim.

Funny how this subject seems to ping across from one board to another.

The biggest problem is that not many understand hard-sulfation vs soft-sulfation, and the cumulative affects of time when dealing with a sulfated battery.

Proper charging and maintenance *from the start* will prevent sulfation in the first place.

Batteries that have been "revived" from desulphators are usually never put on a load-test to reveal that these zombies are not ideal for much more than non-critical low demand applications now. Those that have suffered from hard-sulfation over time are also subject to more chemical abuse than just sulfation. In most cases, it is just better to learn from the experience, and charge and maintain properly.

This differs from the soft-sulfation affect of leaving your dome light on for a day, and many smart chargers will try and burp a very low voltage battery with high-voltage until it reaches a level that can accept a normal charge once again. My two favorites for that are the Tecmate-Optimate series, and Battery-Minder - both of which you can leave on all the time - or not. Up to you.
