A discussion of "notebook batteries" almost always refers to the battery packs contained in notebook or laptop computer.
Most often these days LiFePO4 chemistry cells in either a polymer bag or cylindrical cell (18650) format are the components of the battery pack which includes some form of cell balancing and cell voltage protection circuitry.
Not a cost effective way to build up an inexpensive RE battery pack, but with a cheap source of partially failed battery packs, not unreasonable to experiment with.
