Folks: You won't find Solar 2 on Google or anywhere else. It's gone. Got removed in 2009 or so after being derelict for a few years. Currently, I think there may be some PV or parabolic trough collectors there and some space exploration stuff of some sort unrelated to any solar energy application. The facility was actually in a place called Daggett, more of a state of mind than a town.

I see some strangely symmetric geometric features to the north of town in the aerial photos, I presume they were put there by extra-terrestrials as landing strips for their spacecraft.

Still looks cool in the photos though, the last testament to this small endeavor of mankind's attempt to live in harmony with the universe.
And now, we'll all join hands and sing Kumbaya.

Isn't that the song they sang when they discovered how to make candles from tallow?Comment

You folks back in the US expect Google to be accurate - elsewhere it is a guide more so than accurate. Elevations are flaky and pictures are old - usually by years[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Comment

The new 280 MW concentrating solar plant near Gila Bend, AZ uses molten salt technology for storage until after sundown.Comment

Well, according to Google Earth, there is actually a West Gila Bend and an East Gila Bend, who knew ? ? ?
And that is as of 2012, so unless things have changed since then, I am taking that as gospel
Gila Bend -- when I was a kid we passed through there a couple of times with a trailer. It was mighty hot, the swimming pool at the trailer park was like a bathtub, a little hot on the skin, like when you first get in a jacuzzi.
My goodness ! ! !
So I guess that's probably a good place for a molten salt thing, if you had to pick a place to have one.
The other thing I remember was a big water tower thing right nearby.
I guess it is a nice place to live if you are one of these things:

I couldn't find the molten salt facility on Google Earth. I did however turn up more alien structures, this one appears to be some kind of storage area for high tech components. Note the aerial photos reveal a highly significant truncated pyramid form:

You are correct. I was wrong when I said you won't find it on Google Earth. Mea Culpa. The plant did come down several years ago however.Comment

Did you check out the 392 MW Ivanphah facility. It has 3 towers and is located just South of Primm Nevada just West of RT 15 in CA. That one is very big.
There is also the one up in Nevada just off highway 89 North of Tonopah. The Google photo shows just one "ring" in early construction but is dated 8/9/2013 so it has grown since the picture was taken.Comment
