  • 200 amp subpanel question

    We are trying to put 10 pounds in a five pound bag again.....
    We have a customer with a 300 amp panel.
    200 amp main bus, with 100 amp subpanel feed breaker seperate from main bus.
    He needs more than 60 amps solar.
    Is it feasable to land the 100 amp subpanel feed on a new 200 amp subpanel adjacent to the main panel to give the solar the required bus sizing?
    The solar (80 amps"ish") would feed one end of the 200 amp bus, the main panel feed on the other end, with a 100 amp breaker going to the existing sub panel between the two.
    It seems like I have seen a similar installation, but cant recall exactly how it was set up.
    If this isn't feasable, any other ideas? Our municipality frowns on line side taps, so thats out.

      The only thing that I can see working here would be to feed from the separate 100 amp breaker to a PV-only combiner panel which has no loads connected to it. Then feed the existing 100A40 subpanel from a breaker on the 200A busbar, assuming that the load calculations allow it.
      Some inspectors may (incorrectly IMHO) require the combiner panel to be 150 or 200 amp to satisfy the 120% rule with an 80A feed breaker and 80A of PV.

        Thanks, I don't think the 200 bus will carry it all, so next I guess is to see if he can go 400 amp without upgrading the service. ($$$)

          There should not be a problem with either POCO or AHJ if you install a panel which is higher capacity than the service as long as the main breaker matches or is smaller than the service size.
          But strange objections have been raised before.
          A 200A panel with a 225 A bus would help too. That would allow for 70A of PV without even reducing the size of the main breaker below 200A.

            If you take the main breaker in the 200a panel and replace with a. 150 that would allow for 90 amps.
            But not knowing the load on that panel it could become a problem.
