  • add extra storage tanks on a existing solar water heater system

ok guys afer a few years running fine. I noted that my existing 135 ltr tank will get up to 70 plus degrees by lunch time, So i though it`s time to add extra hot water water storage tank.
I will be adding 135 ltr gas hot water storage tank and just using it as extra storage only.

can someone have a look at the diagram and let me know if i`m connecting it correctly

the pics show as is current setup and then how i propose to add the extra tank.

Your 3 way valve is in the wrong spot, it needs to send the solar water to the primary tank first then to the secondary tank.
The way you show the piping you will be trying to heat 270 l of water at once. You won't be able to get your primary tank water temperature up to where you want it. You need to heat 1 tank at a time, when that tank reaches the set point the next tank is heated. A 3 way valve sending the solar water alternately to each tank is required. I will look for a piping diagram and post it.

          DONE!!!

first full sun day, the 270 liters of water got up to 55 Deg c. In my book we have a successful outcome!

          Cheers....

              New to the site.

Hi, I found your thread on adding an AUX tank, but could not access your uploaded file. I have the same problem as the other guy, an up and running system but not enough storage. Got a unvented system, driven by an air source heat pump, twin coil 180 ltr with 2 panels, and I want to add an extra unvented tank. Could you be so kind as to give me some guidance to the system, I have located a nice 90 ltr unvented indirect cylinder, and could do with knowing if this would be OK. Sorry to be a pain as soon as I joined, but you look like Mr knowledge.
              All the best Bob

Download the PDF (By double clicking the link) file I posted above it will show multiple piping arrangements for 2 tanks and aux heating sources. The link is good just checked it.

                      sr

What way does all these sr numbers make sense? I have seen SR 961, 609C, 601, 868c8 etc.
                      Prices differ a lot.
I wanted to have a mains tank, when this is heated up a second dump tank to not overheat the heat pipes.
What system does this and what numbers of systems do not do this?
The pipes heat up the water, this flows to the mains tank with a pump positionned where? Then the dump tank should be closed.
When the wter temperature is high in the mains tank, then the system should make the valve to the mains tank closed and then redirect to the dump tank in same moment.
When the water in the mains tank cools off then the valve should be reset back to the mains tank. when the water in the mains tank is used up in the evening and colder then the dump tank then the dump tank should be used instead. Can this be done and what do I need for that?

                        shopping list

I actually come up with this and it is incomplete so needs more.
Also if anyone knows cheapest options in this for the 2 tank system please let me know. Like numbers on the machine or device sold.

Circulation pump: How strong must this be?
                        radiators:
                        copper pipes and fittings
                        3 way electric ball valve
                        controller
                        solar vaccuum tubes
                        tube holder and silicone rings
                        tank
                        copper rods
                        electric wires: how big?

Any non basic controller that can be setup to do what the attachment shows will work. You will have to select the controller by viewing the specifications for the controller.

I've been searching for a while to find a second tank heat dump set-up......(and now I have made a post I might be able to see the attachments)

                            Kind regards,
