  • Solid electrolytes to revolutionize battery storage?

Maybe you experts know all about this. This is not scholarly research, but something I saw on [ahem] yahoo. Be good to find something more substantial. I found it interesting, based on lurking here for the last 7 months. Hundreds of thousands of cycles makes thousands look like chicken feed:

Perhaps promising in the lab but the key is commercialization which is a crap shoot as to if and when it happens.

I think I've seen a new! promising! battery technology at least once a week for the last 20 years..... I'm not holding my breath.

Considering that it comes from a financial web interest, many of these "breakthroughs" are just bait for investors, and many never see the light of day in real-world terms.

In the old days of software, it was called "vaporware". Any day now. Next 5 years, ad-nauseum....

OK, OK. I am not surprised at the replies, because I sensed the "oh, wow!" feeling when I read the article. I wasn't thinking about being an investor, but rather the discussions I have seen here about cycle life, and factors that degrade a battery.

Thanks for a dose of reality. I once thought that pigs may fly one day, but that innovation seems just as far off as it did then.

The lack of new battery technology isn't stopping large companies moving forward with pretty sizable storage facilities.

Here is an article about a German company E.ON that is developing a 5MW battery system probably for somewhere in Europe.
