That was a very interesting read . As I expected ,the most expensive battery type/design had the longer life and cycle count. -
Invented about 1910 - even as per the study, so no, it is not a recent invention, even if gel is used.
However, it is an interesting application for solar, although it does rely upon the user to DO IT RIGHT. That means the end user must perform their own initialization charge according to strict paramaters and timeframes. (ie, don't buy used OPzV's - diy'ers take note unless you want to risk getting a previous owner's bad initialization and/or maintenance!)
This is somewhat akin to motorcyle enthusiasts not properly initializing "dry" batteries, or the dealer in too much of a rush to do it right forcing you back for more ....
As individual cells, this is really aimed at the commercial user, who probably doesn't frequent forums much. Most diy'ers and hack end users will probably murder them instead of properly initialize and maintain them.
Still, I looked into the ENERSYS PowerSafe OPzV offerings, which I was surprised at since they also make GREAT vrla pure-lead agm's, which the study above is obviously slanted against.
EnerSys is the global leader in batteries, chargers and accessories for motive, reserve, aerospace and defense applications. Industrial batteries. Forklift batteries.
See the all-important "commisioning" charge on P6.
Given the high quality of their pure-lead "tppl" line of vrla agm's, I wouldn't be surprised if these were the top of the heap as far as quality goes in the OPzV world.Comment

My response was a bit of sarcasm , of course they will promote the more expensive once and wonder who sponsored the test . The results are very biased.Comment
