  • specific gravity test

Does anyone know of an electronic AUTOMATIC specific gravity tester? I would like to gave something that could be placed in one of the battery caps, permanently, that sends a signal to the charger and data logger and not have to use the hydrometer. I have a long term test going and don't want to be a slave to the battery.

    Cheers

They make digital hydrometers, but they are not left in place for continuous monitoring. Sorry I do not know of any ompany that makes what you seek. I have looked for 35 years. Then again I may not have looked hard enough.

Two ways to measure SG. One requires a calibrated weighted float and there is not any room inside a battery jar for the float. The other method requires removing a specific volume of liquid and then weigh it. So regardless of which method you use requires you to remove a sample, and then replace it. That could be done automatically but a bit risky should a leak occur.

Is there any means by which you can gauge the DOD of a battery bank that sees daily (round the clock) use by monitoring the voltage of the bank in some fashion? I've seen voltage gages on towmotors that function akin to a gas gage in a car.

How do those who have AGM battery banks reliably guage their DOD?

You never really know your limits until you exceed them.... that is true in life and batteries. You have one more post than I do

They called battery monitors and use a shunt to measure the current in and out . My bank is agm. You calibrate them when battery is full . Victron bmv700 is on my list to complete my system.

One limitation of battery monitors is that they can tell you the approximate state of the battery bank under the assumption that all of the cells in a series string are currently behaving identically.
If you have a series string you need to look at the individual battery voltages (with AGM) and more important SG (with FLA).

And that is the issue. there will be a series/parallel hook up and it is good to know the individual battery charge.
