  • Long Duration Telecom Series - LDT12-180FT ???

    Hi all,

A guy I know is thinking about selling 12x of his RPS LDT12-180FT batteries which were made in 2008 for about $90 each.
He states that they would probably be great for a solar system battery bank, but I'm not a battery expert, nor have I heard of this company.

The batteries are AGM batteries, and he stated the batteries were probably never deep cycled, and the spec sheet on the batteries (which is attached) says that the batteries have about a 12 year float life.

I was thinking of buying maybe 3 off him, but I just wanted someone to confirm rather or not these batteries are worth using in a solar system that I would be using daily?

You'll find batteries like these discussed occasionally, with the tag "toxic waste". I'm no expert, but from what I've learned in the forums... they are UPS batteries, not meant for deep cycling, and you want no part of them.

Walk away from them. They are not made for RE applications.

Telecom batteries are made to last 8 to 25 years. Sounds great right?

          Wrong!!!!

They are made for FLOAT SERVICE, the part you ignored when you read it and don't want to know or hear about. Telecom batteries are made to set there and do basically nothing their whole service life. They are designed to be able to deliver very high discharge rates, and charged back up quickly. The issue is they can only do that 100 to 200 times. They are only used in Emergency situations when the power goes out to keep your telephone and cell phones talking.

Put an old set like these in daily cycle service, and they will be useless in a month or two. You will then understand what the telephone company did. They turned a liability into an asset which you know own the liability of disposal. That was one of the things I did when I worked in telecom. I found SUCKERS to buy worthless batteries.
