  • more questions than answers

I have a lot of questions two of them come to mind tonight they are un related but hey my thoughts are non linear.

I know the costs of batteries are very high. So I am looking at a grid tied high bred system. Do any of you out their have a grid tied system with no battery that have experienced a grid down power outage who have gone with out power when you have all this equipment and it does you no good.

Next question I am dealing with consumers energy In Michigan. I am paying 8 cents for less than 600 kw and 11.9 cents for over 600. What amount is consumers paying you for power over consumption.

Next. As I understand it consumers will not credit you for power production over two times the amount of consumption. Does any one know where their is written documentation on how this works. I.E. if we used 600 kw on average last year and we put in a system producing 1200 kw in a month will consumers pay back 3 cents x 1200?

    How does it work.

    Listen very closely.

You have no use for batteries, and would be very foolish to do so. Here is the deal with a hybrid system, you are required to have a GENERATOR. Did you hear that, you need a GENERATOR with a hybrid system, very expensive hybrid inverter and a lot of very expensive batteries you get to replace every few years.

If you desire power during outages get a cheap grid tied system with a whole house GENERATOR. A grid tied system wil be half the cost and no battery replacements. 1/4 the cost of a Hybrid system will be batteries you replace every few years. You can get a Grid Tied system with generator and fuel tank for around $30K. Or you can get that hybrid system up around $50,000 to $60,00, then every 5 years replace $10,000 worth of batteries. Wake up and smell your money going down the drain.

While I do not have a grid tie system just about all of them will not produce power if the grid goes down. Although there are some inverters like SMA that have the hardware to provide about 15Amps of power as long as the sun is shining. Most people use a generator to provide emergency power when the grid goes down although if you have "mission critical" equipment that requires no interruptions then a battery system is a better solution.

The cost of electricity is a big factor in ROI of a system. If you are being charged < $0.15/kWh and are not a big user the payback for a grid tie system takes a lot longer. People in CA and HI pay close to $0.50/kWh so it is much easier to justify and pay for a grid tie system there.

How much you get paid for the excess generation will be determined by your POCO rate structure. They vary all over the place so the best source of the correct answer would be from them.

As you noted a solar hybrid system is not cheap in the beginning and the battery system has a high replacement cost every 4 to 5 years. I do not see any financial justification to go with batteries but for other people there is more than a financial reason to use them.

You don't need batteries unless you are looking for backup capabilities.
For your situation you need a net metering solution that would be considerably cheaper than an off grid one.
here is some info on netmetering in your state:

If you are looking for a hybrid system then you would need a modest battery bank. Outback and Xantrex are the vendors of choice for such systems. My system is hybrid and just for some backup like this.
You also in other posts mentioned ground mount, that typically adds considerable cost to the installation. Is there a reason you do not want roof mount?

Somehow some of those that are banned come back to life under a different name or address.
